Another MOSS Portal Project (Past)

Below is the image of a project that I completed in february 2008. This is MOSS Standard Portal with log of customizations. Almost 30 Web Controls were Developed as Web Parts using ASP.NET 2.0 and AJAX. These controls are loading data from a complex dataware house which use hundreds of stored procedures and objects. Audience is used to show and hide controls on the pages and master page and page layouts are designed for the placement.

I have to Hide the company name because of that companies Policy :)

Step 1

Make sure you updates the server at a time with less users.

Take Full Backup

Back up the server farm before you start the software update installation. You should create a backup of search and all databases. We recommend that you follow these guidelines:

Search: Use the full backup operation from SharePoint Central Administration or the stsadm command-line tool to back up the Shared Services Provider (SSP) that is associated with the index server. The backup operation includes both the SSP database and content index in the file system.
Configuration database and Central Administration content database: Perform a full backup operation by using either the stsadm command-line tool or SQL Server. If you are using SQL Server, use the simple recovery model, so that your transaction log is truncated.
Content databases: Perform a full backup operation with either the stsadm command-line tool or SQL Server to back up all content databases. If you are using SQL Server, use the simple recovery model, so that your transaction log is truncated.
Front-end Web server: If you have customized the front-end Web server or are unsure of the extent of the customizations to your Web applications, we recommend that you make a backup image of your front-end Web server. Make sure that you have a backup of any solution packages that you have deployed on your front-end Web servers.

EndUser Project Server 2007 Training

Many people have sent me emails and contacted me for Project Server 2007 End User Training videos but unfortunately I have not seen any Project Server step by step training videos. I am some how thinking about starting Project Server 2007 End User Training Videos screencasts. I am not sure whether I will be able to do it or not but I will try as much as I can. I think one small session per day will not hurt me :)

I am hopeful that I will start the session from tomorrow. I have EPM 2007 VPC which includes Project Server 2007, Portfolio Server, Microsoft Project 2007 and Microsoft Office 2007 etc . I will surly use it.

I also have to compile the list of session that will be in this training. If you have any comments to want to add a session please drop a comment below. I will try to make a session for this.

Installing MOSS on Windows Server 2008 VPC Part III

This is part III of the series. In this post I will provide the steps to install MOSS on Windows Server 2008 by Splitstream.

When I ran the MOSS Setup I got the following message.

Windows Server 2008 does not support MOSS without SP1. Either you can download the SP1 Version of MOSS or you can make splitstream easily. Follow the steps given below.

1. Get both Service Pack 1 of MOSS and WSS 3.0 and rename the files to some easy names.	Open the command prompt and navigate to the location. In my case files on placed on desktop


MOSS SP1
Create a folder in C Drive name SplitStreams	Run the following command to extract the files the folder
	filename.exe /extract:C:\SplitStreams
MOSS Sp1 Setup will run	Accept the agreement and click contineue

Wait for the extraction

WSS SP1
Go to command prompt again	run the command with WSS 3.0 SP1 File. accept and Contineue

Wait for the extraction	navigate to the Extracted Folder C:\SplitStreams in my case

Press Control + A or Select All Files and Press Control C to copy all files	Go to MOSS Installation Folder and copy the files to Updates folder

The folder will look like this
	Run MOSS Setup now and configure as usual. If you don't know how to install MOSS see the guide in the files section or link in the my best posts. MOSS Installation Guide - Step by Step
Installing Project Server 2007 on the same VPC
Go to Project Server Installation folder and copy all the files from Splitstream folder to that Updates folder
Run project Server setup and then run the configuration wizard.

Installing MOSS on Windows Server 2008 Part II

In this post I will provide steps to install SQL Serve 2008 on Windows Server 2008 VPC.

Installing SQL Server 2008

1. Run the Downloaded SQL_YYY_FULL.exe and extract the files to some temp location	2. This will automatically initiates the installation of .NET framework 3.5.

3. .NET Framework Installed	4. setup will install a Hotfix

You should restart the computer	Setup will configure your computer

Now login again	Run Setup.exe from extracted Folder


Run the configuration checker	Look for the status of each option

Installation of SQL Server 2008 Server	Select New SQL Server standalone

Setup support rules will identity any potential problem	Wait for the configuration to get completed

Enter the CD Key	Accept the license agreement

Setup Support Files will be installed

	Select the desired options for SQL Server
Select the Default Instance or change if required	Click Next

Specify the password for system account	I left it blank and selected all the account as the same account

Select the authentication mode as required I normally use windows Auth	I specify the administrator incase you want an domain account to have full SQL Rights

I gave the same user rights on Analysis Services	I left the reporting services to configure later

Click Next	Click Next Again

Confirm and review your settings and click install

Click Next when finished	Click Close

SQL Server 2008 is installed. In the next post I will tell you how to install MOSS using Split Stream.

Installing Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (SP1) on Windows Server 2008 (Part I)

Introduction

I was unable to to do anything for my blogs from last few months because of the load of work first and then the certifications challenge that I took. But I am putting some screenshots here that I have taken using Office InfoPath my preparation of a Windows Server 2008 VPC. I will be using the following technologies for this VPC

This will be a series of posts and will mostly contains screenshots. Let the image talking :)

1. Installing Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0

1. Load the ISO file form Microsoft Virtual PC.	2. Click Install Now

3. If you have the key enter it otherwise leave it empty	4. Click Yes on Key confirmation

5. Select the version for evaluation I selected the Enterprise with Full Installation	6. Accept the License agreement and click Next

7. Click Custom as there is no other option on new installation :)	8. Select your drive and click Next

9. Wait for the installation to be finished


10. Click OK to Enter your user name and password	11. Enter your desired user name and password for creating the VPC user account

1. From Roles Section Click Add Role	2. Click Next

3. Select Application Server	4. Wizard will ask you for an additional component. Click Required Feature

5. Then Select Web IIS	6. Another Wizard will start Click Next

7. Select the required options as required. I selected all for this	8. Select the 2nd options for SSL Certification (Configure Later)

9. Select the desired Server Roles for your Web Server	10. Review your installations and click Install

Project Server 2007 - Additional Certification

After looking at the preperation guide I decided to took the 70-639 Exam today and passed it easily. It was the longest exam I have ever seen and has 75 Questions in total. I must say that no one can attempt these questions without having real time implementation and support knowledge for EPM. The exam covered Upgrade, Analsysis and Reporting Services, Portfolio Server fields, Project Templat and backup and restore in general. If you are working on EPM 2007 as administrator and working on all these things you should take this exam. By the way I saw the following titles in the mcp profile page.

Microsoft Enterprise Project Manager
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (EPM 2007)
Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist (Project Server 2007 – Microsoft Partner Competency on Information Worker Solutions)
Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist (Project Server 2007)
Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist (Microsoft Project 2007)

Now I am little bit confused on the next step. There are two paths that I can take one goes to PMP and Project Management and another goes to .NET 2.0 and 3.0 to Enterprise Architect. I will take the decision this week after discussion with my friends and collegeues.

Project Server 2007 Certifications Completed :)

Finally an year or more after the launch of Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 I was able to complete the new certification model of this beautiful technology and became Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional (MCITP) for Project Server 2007 or Enterprise Project Management Solution 2007. Although I am late in terms of this certifications but it was mostly because of the work I was doing which was more SharePoint centric and less Project Server from last 1 and half years. Any way this Exam involved collection of 3 exams

Microsoft Project 2007 (70-632)
Microsoft Project Server 2007, Managing Projects (70-633)
Microsoft Project Server 2007, Managing Projects and Programs (Pro: 70-634) Exam.

I enjoyed allot while I took these tests and I must say that I was not near to 1000 marks in any of three exams J so make sure that you put a good amount of effort before going to this exam. But overall I felt that I have an extra advantage of having a solid 2 years of full time experience of Implementation and management of a day to day activities of an EPM System. Here I should mention a place where I was.

I do not forgot the time at INTECH when I was working full day on the EPM related tasks. That was the best period for me being a EPM Expert. Although I was able to successfully implement the EPM 2003 system there but in reality I have not tried 100% to GET out of the BOX for the technology in terms of its real advantages. Project Server 2003 technology was built with number limitations for extensions and reporting but I was able to provide good piece of reporting with less effort. But I am happy that I was able to answer many of my customer answers that were thrown towards me at that time. There were number of questions in the exams that were directly related to an environment where you have solid EPM implementation. The questions like Leveling Resources, Using Generic or Role Based resources, Skills and RBS, Categories, Data Analysis and reporting requirements were already covered. I must say thanks to Mr. Mubarik Mustafa (PMP) and director of my department for giving me the chance to work on this challenging job and his trust on me to ask new questions every day and put me to learning business for almost 2 years. It is because of him that I was able to take the full EPM certification in just 3 weeks time. “MM” I wish there will be a day that I can work for you J once again J but hopefully on something like Project Server 2012 J.

Coming back to future, Enterprise Project Management or Project Server 2007 is not a very known technology here is gulf but I have been in contact with number of people that have an a limited initiative using Project Server 2003. As like other 2007 products Project Server 2007 is looking like a matured product and have get rid of all the short comings in 2003 model people are looking forward to upgrade/migrate to 2007 version. Hopefully I will be able to work more on project server and get the taste of upgrade + new implementation.

I have become really bad in blogging which was due to the load but mostly due to proxy enabled networks where windows live or Word failed for blogs. But I am now trying to get back much greater than before and putting one serious attempt.

Yet Another Certification (MCTS - Project Server 2007)

I passed the Microsoft Project Server 2007, Managing Project Certification Exam (70-633) today. I am Now MCTS for Project Server. 1 Exam is left to earn a new certification placeholder of Microsoft Certified IT Professional. This exam was pretty much easy for me. During my time with Intech I was doing all the things questioned in the exam like adding proposed bookings, replacing generic resources, tracking and monitoring plans. I have lost few marks in the project initiation, planning and execution but not much. Offcourse I should I was not project manager at that time :) not really 5 questions were confusing for me to do.

My next target is now the 70-634 - Programs and Portfolio Exam. This one is a little tough as it covers alot of aspects of project management. I need time for preperation. I hope I can complete everything before the end of this month. but anyway best of Luck.

Am I back to Blogging business

Yes but not fully. I have been in very busy since I came to KSA. The projects that I have worked were not in very good shape so I have to work 200% to finish them on time and budget (Frankly don't care the budget stuff).

The worst thing that can happened to my blogging is that I have broken my old buddy HP-Compaq 6110 notebook that contains everything that I wrote for blogging purpose. I have no time to rewrite them again. Another thing to be worse the situation is that everyone use proxy server here and windows live writer does not support some proxy configuration. Microsoft Word simply replies in No on proxy :). Any But for now I am completely concentrating on my certifications. I have a long way to go WRT my certifications. Here is (was) my plan.

Hopefully I will go for this exam this Saturday. I am confident that I will be able to pass the exam easily.

MCST – Microsoft Project

Yesterday I took 70-632 – Microsoft Project 2007, Managing Projects exam and passed it. I am now MCST Microsoft Project 2007. Exam was not much difficult. The only part that I felt and lost few marks was Task Types and Scheduling. Rest was pretty easy straight forward project related stuff.

My next target is Microsoft Project Server 2007, managing projects exam which is 70-633. I have looked into the study guide and seems like I have done enough work on PS to cover everything other than deliverables, timesheets, PSI and cubes. Rest of the topics is already covered during my work.

Passed the Windows SharePoint Services Development Exam 70-541

Finally after waiting for 6 months I went for 70-541 and passed it. It was supposed to be a tough exam but because I am involved in lot of heavy customization of WSS from last 6 months specially in building web parts, feature, Solutions, and WSS API I was able to take it comfortably. Anyone with 1 year of experience in WSS Development can pass the exam.

By Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson is the best book to prepare for the exam.

I have now completed the set of 4 exam for SharePoint. My next target will be to update my .NET certification and then MCITP for Project Server 2007.
